- A Busy Month for Waterline Presentations
Jamie Wills, President of Waterline, and Michelle Taylor, Associate Engineer at Waterline have had a busy month presenting our technical expertise to a wide audience. Jamie Wills presented Past and Future Hydrogeology Applications in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin for the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists, as well as a follow-up presentation to earth science graduate students and faculty at the University of Calgary. These presentations focused on the fundamental importance of hydrogeology and water resources to all sectors of the Alberta economy. It also highlighted the evolving role that government, academia, industry and consulting must play to ensure that Alberta’s water resources are sustainably managed for current and future generations. Michelle Taylor is presenting this afternoon at Exova Tech Talks about the importance of water supply maintenance. Waterline has tested 1000s of water supplies and has assisted with maintaining 100s of water supplies since the company’s inception in 2000. During these decades of experience, Waterline has often encountered industrial and domestic users of potable and non-potable water supplies that are not maintained, leaving themselves and their visitors at risk. Individual domestic water users can easily manage their water supplies using publicly available information, such as the Alberta Government “Water Wells That Last” guidance, but managing water supply risk for hundreds of industry water supplies can be a daunting task. A case study will be reviewed that outlines a data-driven compliance and maintenance program that Waterline has developed to assist Waterline’s client with maintaining 100s of water supplies. #watersustainability #waterwellmaintenance #shockchlorination #waterwellsthatlast #hydrogeology
- The BC Groundwater Licencing Application Fee Waiver Period Has Been Extended Once Again!
On December 15, 2017, The BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change extended the existing use groundwater licence application fee waiver period from December 31, 2017 to March 1, 2019. If groundwater users submit their applications before March 1, 2019, their application fee will be waived. The application fee can range from $250 to $10,000 depending on the quantity and purpose of using water every year. Although the deadline has been extended to 2019, the government is encouraging groundwater users to submit their licence applications early, so their groundwater use is known and protected. Learn more about the fee waiver extension at: https://news.gov.bc.ca/releases/2017ENV0018-000546 For more information on the BC Water Sustainability Act and Waterline's groundwater licencing services, please contact Steph Righi, Waterline Resources Inc.’s Water Sustainability Coordinator at 1-844-585-0802 Ext. 112. #bcwatersustainabilityact #watersustainabilityregulation #watersustainabilityact #groundwaterlicensing

- Induced Infiltration: An Alternative to Direct Surface Water Intakes
Whether it be for potable supplies, industry, recreation or the environment, water underpins our collective well-being and ensuring that we have reliable and sustainable water resources is fundamental to current and future generations. In Alberta and BC, most of us rely on surface water (e.g., rivers and lakes) to sustain our water needs. This is typically accomplished by pumping water from the surface water feature, via direct intakes structures, which form permanent obstructions in the river or lake. Direct intake construction involves in-stream or in-lake activities, such as coffer dam construction and dewatering to facilitate intake installation. These construction activities, and subsequent maintenance activities, create sedimentation in the surface water body. Thus, such activities are not permitted during periods of fish spawning, etc. Moreover, direct intakes are subject to transient water quality issues (e.g., spring time and storm event turbidity spikes), as well as to flow disruptions due to ice obstructions. Unlike intake structures, obtaining surface water indirectly, via shallow wells constructed adjacent to the surface water feature (induced infiltration system), offers the following advantages: Shallow wells can be constructed year-round as they have no in-stream or no in-lake activities. No in-stream or no in-lake activities means that permitting is faster and simpler. Shallow water wells are not subject to transient water quality issues, and sediment-free water is produced year-round, regardless of the turbidity in the surface water body. Shallow water wells are not subject to flow disruptions from ice obstructions. Please contact Waterline at 1-888-542-5611 to learn more about induced infiltration systems, and whether it would benefit your existing or planned project. #inducedinfiltration #surfacewater #sandandgravel #waterpermitting #temporarydiversionlicence
- Aggregates and Groundwater in Alberta: A Hydrogeologist's Perspective
With the introduction of the Alberta Environment and Park's Guide to Water Act Authorizations Required for Dugouts, Borrow Pits, and Other Types of Pits/Excavations in 2016, groundwater has become an increasingly important consideration when developing aggregate resources. To meet current legislative requirements within Alberta, sand and gravel developers need to consider the potential influence of their sand and gravel development on surrounding groundwater and surface water resources, including activities such as pit dewatering, wet pit excavation, end-pit lakes and water bodies, groundwater disturbance by backfilling with fine-grained overburden beneath the water table, etc. In this increasingly complex regulatory environment, Waterline has the experience and expertise to help aggregate producers successfully navigate aggregate development permitting by offering the following services in Alberta and BC: Determining pit locations to minimize permitting costs related to groundwater; Aggregate exploration; Water Act applications; Dewatering studies; Surface water/groundwater interaction studies; Predicting thermal effects and water balances of end-pit wetlands and ponds; and Attending and presenting at open houses and council meetings. Waterline often partners with other subject matter experts to offer the full suite of services required for aggregate permitting and Waterline have active working relationships with a number of small and large aggregate companies in Alberta and BC. - The BC Water Sustainability Act Groundwater Licencing Application Deadline is Fast Approaching!
The deadline to submit an existing use groundwater licence application and avoiding the application fees is December 31, 2017. Submitting a groundwater licence application ensures that applicants keep their priority date, which is based on the first-time groundwater was used by the applicants. Existing groundwater users have until March 1, 2019 to apply for a licence and keep their precedence. Once the March 1, 2019 deadline passes, all groundwater users are considered new applicants. All users must apply for a new groundwater licence, pay the application fees and their date of precedence is the date the licence is authorized. Please see the table below for the requirements on groundwater use: For more information, please contact Maheen Scott, Waterline Resources Inc.’s Water Sustainability Coordinator at 250-585-0802 or maheen.scott@waterlineresources.com. #municipalwater #watersustainabilityact #groundwaterlicencing #groundwaterpermitting #hydrogeology
