Team Lead - Water Resources

JOB DESCRIPTON

Waterline is seeking a Team Lead for our Water Resources division in our Edmonton office. This is an opportunity for a self-motivated professional with management skills to move their career to the next level with a team of highly experienced hydrogeologists, environmental engineers and scientists.

This is a full-time permanent position based out of our Edmonton office.


QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, and EXPERIENCE

The successful candidate must be a strong technical hydrogeologist and self-motivated, with highly developed communication and management skills with the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in hydrogeology, geology, geological engineering, or environmental science (Master’s preferred).

  • Professional Geologist (P.Geo.) or Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation required, or eligibility for registration.

  • 8+ years of experience in hydrogeology, with a strong focus on oil & gas, mining and/or municipal water projects.

  • Strong knowledge and field experience in hydrogeological field methods, including aquifer testing, well installations, geophysics, and water quality sampling.

  • Experience planning and directing complex hydrogeological field programs including field coordination of drilling, sampling and monitoring.

  • Experience working on complex hydrogeological assessments involving source-pathway receptor evaluation.

  • Strong working knowledge and understanding of groundwater legislation in Western Canada.

  • Strong work ethic with well-developed organizational and time management skills.

  • Detail-oriented with excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Proven ability to work both independently and within a collaborative team environment.

  • Human resources management skills and experience required.

  • Applicants must have legal authorization to work in Canada with no restrictions. 

  • Preference will be given to candidates with Alberta or BC relevant work experience.


JOB DUTIES

Technical Leadership & Expertise

  • Provide technical oversight on hydrogeological assessments, water supply development, and/or contaminant hydrogeology projects.

  • Specialization in industry-specific groundwater challenges: mine dewatering, tailings seepage control (mining), steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) water management (oil & gas), and municipal water supply sustainability are considered to be assets.

  • Support regulatory approvals by overseeing water licensing, EPEA compliance, and thermal assessments for groundwater-related projects are considered to be assets.

  • Experience with hydrogeochemistry and groundwater-surface water interaction assessments is an asset but is not required.

  • Specialized training or certification in groundwater modelling (e.g., MODFLOW, FEFLOW) is a definite asset but is not required.


Project & Client Management

  • Manage and oversee multiple hydrogeology projects from initiation to completion, ensuring on time and on-budget delivery.

  • Act as the primary point of contact for key clients, fostering long-term relationships and ensuring client satisfaction.

  • Lead proposal development and technical writing for major projects, ensuring high-quality submissions that align with business objectives may be part of the position but it is not required.

  • Understand and navigate industry-specific regulatory frameworks such as: the Alberta Water Act, the BC Water Sustainability Act, the Alberta Guide to Groundwater Authorization, AER Directives, and/or municipal permitting, etc.


Team Leadership and Mentorship

  • Supervise, mentor, and develop a team of hydrogeologists, groundwater scientists, and technical staff.

  • Conduct performance reviews, provide career development guidance, and support training initiatives to strengthen team capabilities.

  • Foster a collaborative and high-performing team environment by promoting knowledge-sharing and continuous learning.

  • Encourage cross-industry learning within the team, with knowledge applicable to mining, oil & gas, and municipal groundwater projects.


Business Development & Strategic Growth

  • Identify new market opportunities, expand service offerings, and contribute to the company’s strategic growth in hydrogeology and water resources is considered to be an asset but is not required.

  • Support business development by building relationships with clients, regulatory agencies, and industry stakeholders.

  • Lead the preparation of technical proposals, budgets, and work plans to secure new projects.


Interdisciplinary Collaboration

  • Work closely with other disciplines (e.g., GIS, developers, environmental scientists) to develop integrated solutions for clients.

  • Represent the company at industry conferences, workshops, and stakeholder meetings as a subject matter expert.

  • Collaborate with Waterline’s diverse client base that includes industry hydrogeologists, mining engineers, reservoir engineers, environmental coordinators, municipal water planners, urban developers and other business leaders.
